My oldest daughter is heading to middle school next year and there are more times she will be dropped off and need a phone. Many of her classmates have had a phone for one or two years now. I wanted to get her a phone that had a unlimited talk and text plan ( we all know how much tweens and teens love to text) but had no contract so we could try it out and see if the plan works for us. I want the plan to be a good value and not have lots of hidden charges that eat up the savings on the base price.
My husband and I both currently have wireless contacts through a different provider. I am grandfathered in the unlimited data plan for my iPhone so I didn’t want to mess with that plan since once you change you can’t get it back. Both of us have contracts and I did not want to add another contract for my daughter. I am not sure how much the phone will be needed so I wanted to try out a no contract plan.
After some research, we decide to go with the Walmart Famile Mobile plan. The plan is simple which I love . It is based simply on the number of lines you activate (up to five). The price is then just $25 to activate your phone and right now there is a special of just $40 a month for one line and $35 for each additional line. You can either buy a phone for each line or activate your own phone. They phones start at just $19.98 or you can get a basic smart phone for just $39.88. You can cancel at at time with no penalties as well.
I don’t think an 11 year really needs a smart phone. However, my daughter is planning on allocating $20 a month of her allowance towards the phone. This is one of the great parts about this plan since we can try it and and gauge how responsible she is with the phone. If it doesn’t work out, we will just cancel the contract. I think though that she will work hard and be responsible with the phone. I will feel more secure knowing she can call me when she needs to be picked up as well.
The full-service plan is powered by T-Mobile. That means full-service Customer Support and unlimited nationwide calling — from anywhere in the U.S. to any U.S. number (see coverage map). Plus, you can monitor and manage your account (including paying monthly bills) online at myfamilymobile.com. I love that they make it simple to easily manage your account and pay.
I headed to Walmart with my phone and it was so simple to activate and get the plan started. The wireless store in my local Walmart had excellent service and quickly got the phone set up for me in under 10 minutes. You can see more pictures of my trip to Walmart and my phone activation here. If you don’t want to activate the phone in the store, you can just buy the starter kit and the store and activate your new plan online.
I am excited to give this phone to my daughter since I think it more than meets her needs at a great price. I am going to have her use it for a month and then I will update you on our experience. If you are looking for a low cost unlimited wireless plan, be sure to check out the Walmart Famile Mobile plan.
