About a month ago, we purchased a phone plan for my oldest daughter with Walmart Famile Mobile. You can see our shopping trip here. We still love that it is a an unlimited wireless plan with no contract. It is easy to budget for the phone since their are no extra overage charges.
I gave her the phone as a combined 11th birthday and 5th grade promotion present. Now that she is getting older, there are more times she uses/needs a phone. She is going away to Girl Scout camp for a week soon. Last year she didn’t have a phone and I was not able to talk with her all week. Now that she has a phone, they will give it to her at designated times so she can check in. Also in middle school there will be more opportunities for activities where she is dropped off and needs to call me for a ride home.
I am still not 100% convinced that a tween needs a smart phone but she is paying $20 of her allowance each month towards the phone. Since it is summer, I have been having her complete more jobs around the house too. She has already organized quite a few cabinets around my home. This has been a tremendous help to me and helps her understand the value of work and money. I am trying to help her learn about budgeting, money and the cost of subscription services like a mobile phone.
My husband and I both currently have wireless contacts through a different provider. I am grandfathered in the unlimited data plan for my iPhone so I didn’t want to mess with that plan since once you change you can’t get it back. Both of us have contracts and I did not want to add another contract for my daughter. I am not sure how much the phone will be needed so I wanted to try out a unlimited wireless plan with no contract.
I am still very happy with the unlimited no contract plan. She has not really used the phone much over the last month but I love that I don’t have to worry about the number of minutes she uses or the number of texts she sends since both are unlimited under the plan.
I set up the automatic bill pay but I love that I can monitor and manage our account (including paying monthly bills) online at myfamilymobile.com.
I think the unlimited wireless phone plan is a great value and a perfect option for a teen, tween, or anyone who wants to save on mobile phone costs. This is one expense that can start to add up quickly once you add on options or have overage charges.
